Happy pride month! I cannot believe it's already June! If you haven't had a chance to check out the bloom tour installations you've still got a little time. This week on Wednesday I dropped off a refresh of the large arrangement I did for the @theskeletonkeyodditorium and I will be doing the same thing this Wednesday for the last weekend of bloom tour. All the installations will be up until at least the 8th so get downtown to see them while you still can! It's a great excuse to downtown and a way to kick off rose festival. If you haven't been to The skeleton key I can't recommend it highly enough; they've got all sorts of fantastic historical oddities and some great creepy creations from local artists.
But, speaking of Rose Festival...
I'll be working on a few of the small floats again this year so I'll try to include some behind the scenes on what all goes into that. So far most of the float work is pretty old school and falls back on not very environmentally friendly industry standards. It has been both interesting and sad to learn how the floats use loopholes to meet the requirements of being made entirely from plant materials and lean heavily on floral foam even though we know it to be an awful single use plastic that pollutes our waters and poisons our sea life. While I refuse to use floral foam in my own business and projects; working on the floats is a freelance gig I've done the last few years so I don't get to make that call. Sounds like this year we're working under even more timeline pressure than years past so I don't anticipate any changes but I am hoping that maybe someday I'll be able to influence them in a positive direction. It has been impressive to see all the hard work that goes into putting these things together and I'm not even working on the major floats; it truly takes an army.
